Rawls and Knight: Connections and Influence in A Theory of Justice1

چکیده
1 I would like to thank David Levy, Erik Angner, and Ross Emmett for helpful comments on earlier drafts of this paper. I should especially note David Levy's generosity in making available the scans of Rawls' copy of The Ethics of Competition and other essays, and for accompanying encouragement. 1 For [Rawls], as for the Marxists, positivists, and Utilitarians, moral systems are creations of human societies, designed to solve problems that arise when people live together. No doubt we all agree that extremes of wealth and poverty are unjust-especially when they do not correspond with personal effort or sacrifice-and are bad in other ways. The question is, what can we do about it? Can the rules of the economic game be so changed that the winnings, symbolic and real (and the former are not much inferior in importance), will accord better with some accepted or defensible criterion of justice? And can it be done without wrecking the game itself, as a game, and as a producer of the fruits on which we all live?-Frank Knight, " The Role of Principles in Economics and Politics " 3

متن کاملConnections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...
متن کاملاثر آبیاری درازمدت با پساب شهری تصفیهشده بر هدایت آبی اشباع یک خاک لومسیلتی و برآورد آن - مطالعهی موردی
Treated wastewater may influence soil structure, porosity and as a consequence, soil saturated hydraulic conductivity. This study aims to assess the effect of wastewater on saturated hydraulic conductivity; and to determine the suitable soil solids fractal dimension to incorporate into the pedotransfer function by Rawls et al (1993) for estimation of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). Soi...
متن کاملNumerical study on the behavior of link-to-column connections in eccentrically braced frames
Geometry of eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) in some cases causes the connection of link beam to the column. The details of such conditions should be studied carefully due to the full plastic rotation in the link beam. In this research, the behavior of link-to-column connection is modeled and the failure modes are considered. Based on the previous researches shear link can exhibit better beha...
